Pearl is the birthstone for the month of June. Natural pearls are very very rare and almost all the pearls you find in the market today are cultured pearls. All the pearls are formed in oysters. Oysters that used to produce natural pearls are vanishing because of the increasing pollution and excess fishing.

When an irritant like a sand particle enters a mollusk’s shell, a lustrous substance is produced around the object to protect the mollusk’s internal surface. This shiny substance gets deposited into layers upon layers and this forms a pearl. This shiny substance is called the “nacre”. It takes around 7-8 years to form a pearl.
